Hned po Tirpitzovi byl Bismarck, vlajková loď německého válečného námořnictva, největším německým bitevním plavidlem. Jeho výtlak tak dosahoval úctyhodných 50 900 tun a posádka čítala 2092 členů. Do služby byl Bismarck uveden 24. srpna 1940 a přístav poprvé opustil 18. května 1941 při operaci „Rheinübung“. Spolu s další německou lodí Prinz Eugen byl však brzy objeven britskými průzkumnými letadly. Při setkání s britským bitevním křižníkem Hood 24. května 1941 byl Bismarck ještě úspěšný a podařilo se mu svého soka potopit. Následovalo však dlouhé pronásledování, při kterém byl Bismarck 26. května 1941 zasažen torpédem z britského bombardéru a zadržen a ostřelován bitevními loděmi King George V a Rodney. 27. května 1941 ho nakonec potopila jeho vlastní posádka 490 km od francouzského pobřeží.
